In 1629, the Dutch East India Company ship Batavia struck a reef off the coast of Western Australia. The shipwreck was only the beginning.
Hundreds of passengers and crew found themselves stranded on the barren islands of the Houtman Abrolhos, short of water, food and hope. When senior officers left in search of rescue, authority collapsed.
Into the vacuum stepped under-merchant Jeronimus Cornelisz.
What followed became one of the darkest episodes in maritime history: intimidation, calculated murder, sexual violence and a systematic attempt to reduce the number of survivors. Men, women and children who had escaped drowning now faced a far more deliberate threat from their own companions.
But Cornelisz did not control everyone.
On another island, soldier Wiebbe Hayes and a small group of survivors found fresh water, built crude defences and refused to surrender. Their stand against the mutineers became an extraordinary struggle for survival at the edge of the known world.

The story also follows Batavia beyond 1629, from the forgotten wreck beneath the reef to its rediscovery by divers and archaeologists centuries later, when timber, weapons and human remains began revealing the physical evidence behind the surviving accounts.
