THE ROMAN PROSCRIPTIONS is a gripping account of the death lists that helped destroy the Roman Republic and taught Rome that political murder could be made legal.
Rome did not fall in a single day. Its republic died over generations, as ambition, civil war, fear, revenge, and military power broke the restraints that had once protected public life. Before emperors ruled openly, Roman citizens saw something terrifying: names posted in public, property confiscated, killers rewarded, and enemies placed outside the protection of law.
This book follows the road to the proscriptions: the violence of the Gracchi, the Social War, the rise of Marius and Sulla, Sulla's march on Rome, the first death lists, confiscation, reward, and the attempt to restore the republic through fear. It then follows the next generation through Pompey, Crassus, Caesar, Caesar's clemency, the Ides of March, and the return of the lists under Antony, Octavian, and Lepidus.
At the heart of the story stands one of Rome's darkest truths: a republic can keep its language of liberty even after its habits have become violent. Sulla claimed to restore the republic. Caesar claimed mercy. The Second Triumvirate claimed necessity. Yet each stage pushed Rome further from shared law and closer to one-man rule.
Part of the Blood and Power Series, this book examines how death lists, confiscation, civil war, and the politics of revenge helped turn Roman liberty into imperial obedience.
