THE PURGE OF THE TEMPLARS is a gripping account of the destruction of the Knights Templar, one of medieval Christendom's most powerful, wealthy, and mysterious military-religious orders.
On Friday, 13 October 1307, officers of King Philip IV of France moved across the kingdom with sealed orders. Members of the Order of the Temple were arrested in commanderies, houses, farms, and fortified residences. They were accused of denying Christ, spitting on the cross, obscene initiation rites, idol worship, secrecy, corruption, and heresy.
The charges shocked Europe. The Templars had been founded to protect pilgrims and fight for the Christian cause in the Holy Land. They had won papal favour, gathered donations, built commanderies across Europe, defended castles, moved money, lent to rulers, and become one of the most recognisable institutions of the crusading world. But after the fall of Acre and the loss of the crusader states, their purpose was weakened while their wealth remained visible.
This book follows the rise and destruction of the order: the crusading world that created it, the wealth and power that made it vulnerable, Philip IV's hungry monarchy, Pope Clement V's weakness under royal pressure, the mass arrests, torture, forced confessions, trials, retractions, the Council of Vienne, the suppression of the order, and the burning of Jacques de Molay.
Part of the Blood and Power Series, this book examines how accusation, confession, law, faith, money, and royal power combined to destroy an order whose guilt was never cleanly proven, but whose destruction served the needs of a king.
