Paris. Left Bank. 1880 CE. A city still raw from the bloodiest week in its modern history. A sculptor named Rodin, commissioned to make a bronze doorway for a museum that will never be built. Inside a cold state warehouse beside the Seine, he begins to model a seated figure - a man thinking. Twenty thousand Parisians had been shot in these same streets nine years before. The arguments about where thinking lives - in the mind, or in the body - have never stopped.
The Thinking Reed asks what it would have meant to be inside that moment. Not as a sculptor. Not as a philosopher. But as the mouleur - the mould-maker - who poured plaster into the hollow of every figure the master produced, and one February morning crouched in the cold studio and looked, for the first time, not at the face - but at the toes.

The facts are extraordinary enough.
Rodin was rejected three times by the academy that should have trained him. His first sculpture was accused of fraud - for being too anatomically truthful to have been made by hand. The Thinker began as Dante - 71 centimetres of clay, never intended to stand alone. At the Salpêtrière, Charcot was hypnotising women whose bodies said what their minds could not speak. The Gates of Hell were never cast in bronze in Rodin's lifetime.
History is not a sequence of dates. It is billions of lives lived through a present as urgent and irreplaceable as your own. Coal smoke and wet clay in the cold morning air. A plaster mix warming in the hands - the moment it locks. A garret on the rue Mouffetard, a battered Pascal, a young man trying to understand where, in his own body, the thinking happens. They pressed thought into bronze and it is still asking us questions. This book is the attempt of one ordinary man - who understood things by touching them - to answer.
