He came from Roman Africa. He seized an empire in chaos. And he changed forever the relationship between the emperor and the army.
Septimius Severus was born at Leptis Magna on the North African coast, far from the ancient aristocratic families who believed Rome belonged naturally to them. Yet through ambition, political skill, military command and extraordinary determination, he rose from provincial senator to master of the Roman world.
When Emperor Commodus was murdered, Rome descended into one of the greatest succession crises in its history. The imperial throne was effectively sold by the Praetorian Guard while rival commanders prepared their armies for civil war. Severus moved faster than them all.
Marching on Rome, he seized the capital before defeating Pescennius Niger in the east and Clodius Albinus in the west. His victory at Lugdunum made him undisputed emperor. Campaigns against Parthia then transformed a ruler born through civil war into a celebrated Roman conqueror.
But Severus ruled through far more than the sword.
He strengthened the army, increased soldiers' privileges, challenged senatorial authority, promoted some of Rome's greatest jurists, transformed his birthplace of Leptis Magna and constructed a new imperial dynasty around his formidable wife Julia Domna and their sons Caracalla and Geta. His solutions restored stability, but they also made the throne more dependent upon military loyalty and increasingly expensive to hold.
Septimius Severus: The African Emperor Who Ruled by the Sword follows Severus from Leptis Magna to Rome, Parthia and the distant frontiers of Britain. It explores the Year of Five Emperors, the great Roman civil wars, Julia Domna, Caracalla and Geta, the transformation of the imperial army and the final campaign that ended with Severus's death at York in AD 211.
Neither simple tyrant nor uncomplicated saviour, Severus was one of Rome's most capable and consequential emperors - a ruler whose victories saved the empire in his lifetime while helping transform the nature of imperial power for generations that followed.
Part of the Masters of the Roman World series - the lives, ambitions, wars and political struggles of the figures who shaped the Roman Empire.
