Knowing yoga is only the beginning. Learning how to share it with clarity, compassion, and confidence is the next step.
Rose Temple Yoga School Yoga Teacher Training Manual 2: Practice & Teaching helps developing yoga teachers transform foundational knowledge into accessible, student-centered instruction.
Written by Bertena Varney for Rose Temple Yoga School's 200-hour yoga teacher training program, this manual focuses on the practical skills needed to plan, organize, and lead meaningful yoga experiences. It encourages teachers to look beyond achieving a perfect posture and instead consider the individual student's body, abilities, comfort, goals, and lived experience.
Inside this manual, students will explore:
- Foundational principles of yoga teaching
- Accessible posture instruction and alignment cues
- Modifications for different bodies and abilities
- Thoughtful use of chairs, blocks, straps, blankets, bolsters, and other props
- Inclusive, invitational, and empowering teaching language
- Breath-centered movement and mindful transitions
- Class planning and sequencing
- Creating balanced and purposeful class experiences
- Teaching gentle, chair, restorative, yin, and other accessible practices
- Supporting beginners, older adults, plus-sized students, and people with limited mobility
- Observation, practice teaching, and constructive self-reflection
- Consent, professional boundaries, safety, and responsible scope of practice
- Developing confidence and an authentic teaching voice
Rather than relying on one rigid approach, Manual 2 invites developing teachers to become observant, responsive, and creative. Students learn to offer choices, communicate clearly, and create environments where participants feel respected and empowered.
This manual is especially valuable for teachers who want to serve populations that are often overlooked in conventional yoga spaces. It supports the belief that students should not have to change who they are to belong in a yoga class. The practice and the teaching should be adaptable enough to meet them where they are.
Whether used as part of a formal teacher training, for continuing education, or as a practical reference while planning classes, this manual provides guidance for teaching yoga with greater confidence, accessibility, and compassion.
Yoga should adapt to the person-not require the person to adapt to yoga.
