Discover the fascinating journey of boxing from ancient fistfighting to the modern global sport known as the sweet science.
Boxing 101: History of Boxing is an accessible introduction to the people, rules, rivalries, and cultural changes that transformed fistfighting into one of the world's most enduring combat sports. Written for newcomers, casual fans, and anyone curious about the history behind the ring, this book traces boxing across centuries without burying the story in unnecessary jargon.
Inside, you will discover:
- The ancient roots of fistfighting in Egypt, Greece, and Rome, including the brutal contests that came long before modern boxing.
- The rise of bare-knuckle prizefighting in 18th- and 19th-century Britain and the early rules that began bringing structure to the sport.
- How the Marquess of Queensberry Rules introduced gloves, timed rounds, knockdown counts, and the framework of modern boxing.
- Why weight classes changed the sport by creating fairer matchups and giving fighters of different sizes a path to championship success.
- The stories of legendary fighters including John L. Sullivan, Jack Johnson, Sugar Ray Robinson, Muhammad Ali, Mike Tyson, Floyd Mayweather, and other champions who defined their eras.
- How boxing became a major business shaped by championship belts, promoters, sanctioning bodies, media, and global audiences.
- The ways boxing has reflected larger social issues, including race, class, celebrity, culture, and changing ideas about sport and entertainment.
- Why the sweet science continues to attract fighters and fans generations after its earliest contests.
From ancient Olympic fistfighting and bare-knuckle battles to heavyweight icons, modern champions, and the worldwide boxing industry, this book provides a clear chronological journey through the moments that shaped the sport.
Perfect for boxing fans, sports-history readers, and newcomers who want to understand how the rules, fighters, and traditions of the past created the boxing world we know today.
Step into the history behind the gloves and discover how the sweet science became a global phenomenon.
