Too often in my work involving teenagers, young adults, older adults and even seniors, I find a general lack of basic information. Because of this dearth of information about the impacts that drugs have on their lives, livelihoods and futures they often find themselves in a world of woe that they never imagined. Time, and more importantly, lives are being wasted because these things are not discussed openly.

This book is intended to allow parents and elected officials to become aware of the basic information they need to know about what is going on in our communities. It is important for parents because even when schools may be experiencing high levels of drug use and all the problems associated with drug use the information may never reach the parents. This is unfortunate for the children forced to attend these schools. Growing up is hard to do. Growing up in the presence of the violence and mental illness that comes along with illicit drug use is a burden children should not have to bear.

Elected Officials should be aware of these drugs so they can be prepared to listen to and work with concerned parents and children in their sphere of influence. Elected Officials, because of the nature of the tax system in the United States, can weigh in on issues faced by local schools.

It is clear at this point that four things can be stated:

  1. We cannot arrest our way out of this drug problem
  2. Children and Adolescents should not use drugs
  3. Taking Drugs is not a Recreational Activity
  4. Prevention is successful and necessary
