This dual study, defended by Sekimonyo Shamavu Christian (PhD in Energy Economics and Governance from King of Kings University College and D.Min in Leadership and Administration from Heritage Baptist College) on 9 February 2026 in Kayunga under joint supervision of Chancellor Prof. T.E. Van Buskirk and Prof. Louis Akilimali Chirimbo, investigates how multinational oil companies govern and manage petroleum supply in the Great Lakes region (2019-2024), focusing on North Kivu's reliance on the Mombasa Corridor. The research analyzes pricing policies, their effects on supply-chain resilience, governance mechanisms and power asymmetries between multinationals and local authorities, and the strategic role of local infrastructure-pipelines, storage, distribution roads-in enhancing energy security. It finds that multinationals exert strong control over access and policy, exacerbating vulnerabilities and instability. The study recommends targeted infrastructure investments, diversification of supply routes, regulatory and governance reforms, and cooperative frameworks to bolster long-term energy resilience and reduce dependency.
