Floods, earthquakes, heatwaves, landslides, wildfires, blackouts, terrorism, and so on are all happening now, just now! If we don't know how to deal with them and how to get ready, we run the risk of hopelessness and despair for our loved ones and us. But knowledge is power, and there's always something we can do. This is a survival manual, designed for those who want to understand the most common emergencies and catastrophes caused by natural phenomena or human activities. Natural calamities can, indeed, strike at any time, and this can be said with certainty because those of us who already completed our first half-century of age have personally experienced many of these events in our lifetime. Situations are not to be ignored or overlooked; Gaia rarely warns us when it will release heavy rains or incredible hurricanes, shocking earthquakes, lightning storms, or historical volcanic eruptions. She goes on her way and carries us.
The long list of recent tornadoes, tsunamis, avalanches, and earthquakes around the world is a sobering reminder for all and all of us never to take nature for granted and always to know what to do in case Gaia, for reasons of its own, is ready to strike again. We should look for specific steps to prepare ourselves, our families, friends, and acquaintances if a massive event, natural or artificial, happens. This vigilance and readiness are critical to our survival, keeping us alert and prepared for any eventuality. Never take lightly any natural upheavals, and never consider them with the fatality and cynicism of the inevitable, irreparable eventualities to which we can only helplessly surrender; they manifest, and we must be ready and willing to limit or even prevent any damage, thanks to the experience acquired by our species. When we prepare ourselves as well as possible, we ride the disasters, which Gaia wants. She wants us to learn to know her. This book results from a joint effort of consciousness to remain awake, alert, and ready. It is specialized research to be shared, which ensures that even in the most intense scenes, the ones we love and our fellowmen in toto are safe and damages scarce or limited to the very minimum.
