A Changed Perspective challenges one of the most persistent preconceptions in leadership development, that becoming a better leader is simply a matter of changing your behaviors. The book shows that lasting change starts much deeper, at the level of the preconceptions that quietly shape how leaders think, decide, and act. The book gives leaders a practical way to examine and revise their own preconceptions.
This book helps readers by:
- Answering the root question, What do I have to do to become a better leader? Going beneath behavior-change norm to the underlying mindset, the Preconceptions → Beliefs → Behaviors → Competencies cascade that actually determines how a leader performs.
- Explaining why leadership never seems to improve. Why command-and-control persists across generations and why behavior change at the top, when it does happen, tends to be short-lived and regress to the norm of one's peers.
- Naming the invisible forces that hold leaders back. Surfacing the inherited preconceptions and traditions - the dead hand of the past - that new leaders unknowingly absorb from experienced leaders.
- Making sense of why the same problems keep recurring. Showing how status, tradition, blame, and other social influences contaminate problem-solving so difficult situations get accepted as inevitable rather than corrected.
- Preparing leaders for the conflict ahead. Being honest that challenging preconceptions will put them at odds with established leaders who insist they are the one in error and help them navigate that tension.
- Offering a practical model for change. The shift from KRU-I to KRU-II - from a status-and-privilege-based worldview to a reality-and-fact-based worldview - as a lens for improving thinking and decision-making, and leading in ways that are better than those who came before.
- Turning insight into personal action. With a reflective write your own final chapter exercise and a set of guiding questions that push readers to identify which preconceptions to keep, discard, or acquire.
Rather than a checklist of leadership behaviors, this is a book about seeing differently for leaders who are still open enough to question inherited preconceptions before those preconceptions harden. The book offers a demanding but genuinely transformative change in perspective.
