Most people were taught a religion about Jesus. Almost no one was taught the religion of Jesus: the two-level school the oldest gospel describes in plain Greek, an open teaching of mercy and honesty for everyone, and an inner teaching, given in private, about a kingdom that is not in the sky and not in the future, because it is within you.
This book recovers that inner teaching from the evidence: the recorded sayings themselves, the Greek vocabulary the modern translations quietly buried, the Gospel of Thomas sealed in an Egyptian jar for sixteen centuries and recovered in 1945, the memory of the earliest Jewish followers, and the world's contemplative traditions, which mapped the same interior territory under the name of the fourth state of consciousness.
