Surviving the System: A Guide to Navigating Ethical Violations and Workplace Injustice is Nikki Gauthier's deeply personal account of navigating workplace psychological harm, organizational dysfunction, ethical concerns, and the lasting consequences of being unheard within a system she once trusted.
Drawing from a professional career spanning higher education, trauma-informed case management, behavioral health programs, leadership, and contract administration, Nikki entered public service believing that integrity, accountability, and asking difficult questions were essential to doing meaningful work. Over time, however, questions she viewed as responsible began to be interpreted as resistance. Professional disagreements became increasingly personal, responsibilities shifted, psychological safety disappeared, and attempts to seek help through established channels led Nikki deeper into systems of policies, procedures, complaints, and appeals.
The consequences extended far beyond the workplace. Nikki recounts the effects of prolonged stress on her physical and mental health, professional identity, financial stability, relationships, and ability to trust her own perceptions. She also shares what happened when she sought support through supervisors, leadership, human resources, her union, and external complaint processes and what those experiences taught her about the difference between having a procedure and feeling protected by it.
But Surviving the System is not only about what happened.
Drawing lessons from her experience, Nikki examines psychological safety, trauma-informed leadership, workplace accountability, employee advocacy, documentation, organizational culture, and the critical difference between asking employees for buy-in and giving them genuine ownership. She offers readers the insights she wishes she had understood while she was still trying to make sense of what was happening around her.
