Long before anything visibly breaks, a wound goes in. It is laid down early, usually in the first relationships that were meant to keep us safe, and it settles beneath words, into the body, where reason cannot reach it. Picture a saw whose teeth are set slightly wrong. It does not cut one board badly. It cuts every board at the same slant, faithfully, for the rest of a life, and the slant looks, from the inside, exactly like the grain of the world.
In The Same Wound, Jonathan Sumner follows that one crooked cut through everything it touches. A wound bends how a person loves, then how they think, then the systems they build to keep from feeling any of it, until the whole structure meets reality and collapses. Then he widens the lens and finds the identical pattern at the scale of a civilization: Rome, born in violence and insecurity, running the same program at imperial size, all the way down to its fall.
Drawing together attachment science, neuroscience, complexity theory, history, and the sixteen-hundred-year-old voice of Augustine, this is a book about the architecture of breakdown, and about the way back. Healing, it argues, is not a straight line and not a cure. It is a disruption that can break in at any stage, usually through the very thing the wounded self has spent a lifetime avoiding.
The reader follows one man, a composite named Michael, from the small wound of a childhood that looked fine, through the disordered loves and the airtight self-justifications, to the collapse that drops the floor out from under him, and at last to a healing he did not engineer. What breaks a person turns out to be a smaller version of what breaks a people. And in both, the way through is through the wound, not around it.
Written from inside the Christian faith and unafraid of what the institution has made of it, The Same Wound is for anyone who has watched something come apart, in themselves or in the world, and wanted to understand why, and whether it can be mended.
