When Jesus described the last judgment, he said the Son of Man would divide the nations the way a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. We have heard it a hundred times, and we think we know which animal we are. But read the scene again. Both crowds are astonished. The ones certain they belonged with the sheep are turned away. The ones braced for the worst are welcomed in. Nobody saw it coming, because everybody was reading the wrong scoreboard.
In The Same Fire, Jonathan Sumner takes that overlooked detail and follows it all the way down. The markers we sort ourselves by, the blessing and the success and the fluent performance of faith, turn out to be exactly the ones that mislead. The real dividing line runs somewhere we never think to look, and God has been standing there the whole time. Not on the stage. In the person we walked past.
Two people carry the argument through the book:
- a decent, comfortable, churchgoing man who has never once feared he was on the wrong side, and
- a tired, doubting woman who is sure she has already failed.
One of them is right about themselves. It is not the one you would guess.
Drawing on Scripture, church history, and the research on how we deceive ourselves, this is a book about the terror and the mercy hidden in a single possibility: that you can be wrong about your own standing before God, wrong with a clear conscience, and only find out when it is too late to change. It is honest about money, about success, and about the institution that grew up around Jesus and too often sorts people by the very scoreboard he threw out. And it finds, at the bottom of a hard passage, a hope that only the truth can give.
The title comes from an old reading of the judgment kept alive in the Christian East: that heaven and hell are not two places but one reality, the love of God, met by two kinds of heart. The same fire is warmth to one and agony to the other, and the whole difference is in the heart that meets it.
