In 1963, a Madison Avenue agency was hired to make Americans afraid of forest fires. Their answer was Phil - a small, apologetic cartoon flame who felt terrible about what he was. On take twenty-two, at 11:38 p.m. on March 12th, a tired voice actor read the scripted tag Fear the burn as Feel the burn, and nobody in the booth stopped him. The campaign was killed within a year, not because it failed but because it worked in the wrong direction: children found Phil lovable. Five years later a former secretary carried the misread phrase into a Third Avenue health club, where it became the slogan of an entire fitness industry. This is the story of the mascot that was buried, the two words that escaped, and the agency men who never learned they'd changed the language.
