Set against the turbulent backdrop of the week of September 11, 2001, Check Your Oil? follows 34-year-old attendant Buddy Ray Toomer and 71-year-old owner Cleveland Dewberry at Dewberry's Full Service in the fictional town of Tobias, Alabama.

While gas stations across the country exploit the national crisis with soaring prices, Dewberry resolutely keeps his prices steady. Through daily routines, local blood drives, homemade flags sewn with the wrong number of stars, and quiet acts of resilience, this poignant novel captures an ordinary community's extraordinary grace during an unforgettable week.
