In 1846, Chicago-born Tomás Ignacio Aguirre enlists in the U.S. Army, where a drunk sergeant misspells his name, labels him an interpreter based solely on his vowels, and ships him south. Knocked out during the Battle of Buena Vista, Tomás wakes up alone with a bump on his head, a tin cup, and an army that has officially declared him dead.
