So here's something nobody tells you when you first take your clothes off in front of strangers: the hard part isn't being naked. The hard part is figuring out what to do with your hands.
I'm serious. You're standing there, maybe at a resort in Palm Springs or a clothing-optional beach somewhere in Croatia, and you suddenly realize that your hands have spent your entire clothed life having a job. They hold purses. They fidget with jacket zippers. They tug at hems. They smooth down the front of shirts. Hands are the great nervous-system ambassadors of the dressed world, and when you take away the clothes, those hands are suddenly unemployed and absolutely panicking about it.
That was me. Thirty-nine years old, standing in the Pacific Northwest, a woman who had driven a Subaru her whole adult life and thought she had herself pretty well figured out. And then I discovered nudism, and I realized I had approximately zero idea how human beings actually interact with each other when there's nothing left to hide behind. Not a zipper. Not a blazer. Not even a really good pair of jeans that make your butt look like it has ambitions.
My name is Kristin Williams and I have been getting naked in public (intentionally and in organized, consensual, legal settings, before anyone calls anybody) for years now. I live outside Seattle, which means I spend roughly nine months of the year explaining to people at clothing-optional resorts why a person from a place that gray and rainy would voluntarily remove their clothing. The answer is simple. Seattle people are tougher than we look. Also, when you finally get a sunny day in the Pacific Northwest, you are not wasting a single square inch of it under fabric. You're just not.
I've been to nudist resorts across the United States. I've been to naturist beaches in Europe. I've soaked in hot springs in places where the steam is so thick you can barely see the person next to you, which honestly takes a lot of the social pressure off and I fully recommend starting there if you're nervous. I've done naked yoga, naked hiking, naked cooking demonstrations where I wore only an apron because I am not an animal, and I once participated in a naked wine tasting in Tuscany where I learned two things: Italian wine is extraordinary, and sunscreen on your upper back is not something you want to forget even when you're three glasses deep and feeling very relaxed about everything.
