Hi. Kristin again. I am writing this introduction from my back deck on a Sunday afternoon in late April. The Pacific Northwest is finally doing the thing where it decides, after eight months of relentless gray, that it remembers what the sun is. There are tulips in the planter that I did not plant, because the previous owner of this house planted them eleven years ago and they keep coming back every spring without my involvement, which is one of the small ongoing gifts of suburban life. Donna is on the deck with me. Donna does not like the sun on her fur but she also does not want to miss anything, so she is sitting in the small patch of shade under my chair, glaring up at me as though the sun is somehow my fault. We are, the two of us, having a perfectly nice afternoon. The wine is open. The book is starting.

This book is about toxicity. I want to say that right at the top because I want you to know what you are walking into. The previous books in this series have been about, broadly speaking, coming home to yourself. Coming home to your body. Coming home to your nervous system. Coming home to a life that is on your side instead of against you. All of that is real and all of that is good, and if you have not read the previous books, you can absolutely start with this one, but I am going to assume some shared vocabulary and I am going to refer to people who have already appeared in the earlier books, and you can either catch up or just roll with it. Either is fine. The wine is the wine no matter when you arrive at the party.

But this book is about something more specific. This book is about how, even after you have done a lot of the work, even after you have started taking your clothes off in the right places and breathing into your belly and engineering your house to be a nervous system spa, you can still find yourself, year after year, getting tangled up with people who are doing damage to you in ways you cannot quite name. You can be a fully functional adult, with a good therapist and a good circle of friends and a robe by the door, and you can still find yourself, on a Tuesday evening, three months into a new relationship or a new friendship or a new community, realizing that something is very wrong and that you cannot figure out what it is and that you are smaller and more scared and more exhausted than you were three months ago, and that the person across from you, who is smiling at you and telling you they care about you, is somehow at the center of it.

This is toxicity. This is what I want to talk about. And I want to talk about it specifically in the context of the nudist life, because I have come to believe that the nudist life is one of the most powerful tools we have for detecting toxicity, and also, paradoxically, one of the most powerful tools for healing from it. The nudism does not protect you from toxic people. Nothing protects you from toxic people. But the nudism, if you let it, can make toxic people more visible, faster, than almost any other social setting I have ever been in. And once they are visible, you can do something about them. That is the whole arc of this book.
