Why does everyone come to me?
Not your boss. Not the person with the title. You.
You're the one people route around the org chart to find. The one they call before they call their supervisor. The one leadership quietly asks for a read on a situation before making the call. Nobody assigned you this. You didn't apply for it, negotiate for it, or put it on a resume. It just became true, one conversation at a time, and now you're doing something everyone can see and nobody has a name for.
Most leadership books are written for people who already have a title. This one is written for you.
Drawing on twenty years leading without formal authority in the United States Air Force, and the same pattern tested again in commercial aviation operations, Nobody Assigned You This names this pattern and gives it real structure for the first time. It maps exactly how this kind of influence forms, what it quietly costs you, where it goes wrong when it's misread, and what actually changes the day formal authority finally does arrive.
Inside, you'll find:
How trust actually forms between peers, and why it has almost nothing to do with rank or title
The specific skill of translating leadership's intent downward without distorting it
Why becoming a mirror for someone's thinking works better than handing them an answer
How to hold loyalty in two directions at once, upward to leadership and sideways to peers, without betraying either
What this role actually costs over the years, and what it eventually pays back
How to deliberately grow someone else into the same role
The real decision every informal leader eventually faces: whether to pursue formal authority at all, and why choosing to stay exactly where you are can be the stronger choice
The specific ways this pattern fails, and how to recognize them before they cost you the trust you've built
What changes the day the title finally does arrive
This is not a framework to implement or a certification to earn. It's a mirror, a clear enough description of the role that if you've ever wondered why people keep finding their way to your desk, you'll recognize yourself before the first chapter ends.
Readers of Simon Sinek's Start With Why and Lolly Daskal's The Leadership Gap will find familiar territory here. But where those books ask you to adopt a new posture, this one speaks to people already living inside the pattern it describes.
Nobody Assigned You This speaks equally to civilian professionals navigating flat, cross-functional organizations and to the veterans among them, translating a familiar instinct into an unfamiliar workplace. Joseph Mayeaux spent twenty years in Air Force aviation maintenance, the last five in senior enlisted leadership, before bringing the same pattern into commercial aviation operations as an operations manager. He holds an MBA from Indiana University's Kelley School of Business.
You are already doing some version of this work. This book is about doing it on purpose.
