Let me share a little story on how my cousin had a similar challenge and how he got to fix it. Alex has always been at odds with his coworker, Tom. Tom's continual negativity and criticism made every conversation uncomfortable. Determined to fix the situation, he came to me for advice. Alex approached his contacts with Tom with increased confidence and boldness, according to the tactics he learned from the book. Rather than responding defensively to Tom's statements, Alex applied the advice I gave him which is also penned down in this book hoping to understand the source of Tom's unhappiness. Using the strategies I told him Alex gently addressed Tom's problematic behavior without escalating the issue. He maintained a tough yet courteous demeanor, avoiding being pulled into unneeded conflicts or power battles. As time passed, Alex detected a slight alteration in their relationship. He related to me how Tom's attitude softened when he realized Alex was eager to engage constructively and establish common ground. Alex effectively changed a difficult relationship into one of mutual respect and collaboration by exercising patience, empathy, and excellent communication skills.
