This book presents a comprehensive analysis of drought patterns in India over the period 1968 to 2012, highlighting the spatial and temporal variability of one of the country's most persistent natural hazards. Given India's heavy dependence on the southwest monsoon for nearly 70-80 percent of its annual rainfall, fluctuations in precipitation have profound implications for agriculture, water resources, and rural livelihoods. The study examines major drought years such as 1972, 1979, 1987, 2002, and 2009, identifying their frequency, intensity, and regional distribution.Using long-term rainfall data obtained from the India Meteorological Department (IMD) and standardized drought indices such as the Rainfall Anomaly Index (RAI), the research evaluates trends in drought occurrence across different states and agro-climatic zones. The findings reveal significant regional disparities, with western and central India experiencing higher drought frequency compared to other regions. The study also explores the relationship between drought events and large-scale climatic drivers, particularly the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO), which influences monsoon variability.
