Blending philosophy of mind, cybernetics, systems theory, clinical psychology, phenomenology, hypnosis, NLP, contemplative practice, trauma theory, and the study of altered states, Chris Cathey presents consciousness not as a fixed object inside the brain, but as a living process shaped by body, language, memory, state, relationship, culture, and environment.
The book begins with the central difficulty of consciousness: experience is the medium through which all observation occurs, yet it is also the very subject being investigated. From there, the work moves through the hard problem of consciousness, the history of the mind-body question, the distinction between consciousness and attention, wakefulness, intelligence, memory, and the brain, and the systems-theoretical claim that consciousness is better understood as process, pattern, and organization.
Later chapters examine the map-making nature of the nervous system, state dependency, the shifting self, language, frames, metaphor, trance, hypnosis, narrative identity, trauma, coercive control, digital consciousness, meditation, psychedelic states, dreams, lucidity, and the autonomous unconscious. The book closes with the ethical and political implications of cognitive sovereignty, influence, and the possibility of a civilization that takes consciousness seriously.
