How did a small Caribbean island build an international network capable of influencing political movements, intelligence services, governments, and revolutionary organizations across the world?
Havana's Long Revolution examines how Cuba transformed the victory of 1959 into a global system of espionage, political warfare, guerrilla support, ideological influence, military intervention, revolutionary education, and strategic alliance building.
Cuba never possessed the population, industrial strength, or conventional military power of a great state. Instead, Havana developed another form of power based on relationships, access, intelligence, political training, international solidarity, and the ability to connect otherwise separate struggles. The island became a meeting place for militants, activists, political exiles, intelligence officers, students, diplomats, liberation movements, and revolutionary governments.
Drawing substantially upon the United States Department of State report Cuba: The Capital of 21st Century Communism, together with the government records, court materials, intelligence assessments, congressional testimony, historical studies, and journalism cited within it, this book investigates Cuba's theory of permanent revolution, the Tricontinental strategy, the export of guerrilla warfare, Cuban operations in Latin America and Africa, the development of Havana's intelligence services, major espionage cases, Cuba's influence on the American New Left, revolutionary tourism, medical diplomacy, Venezuela, and modern relationships with Russia, China, and Iran.
The book does not assume that every activist, organization, or government associated with Cuba acted under Havana's command. Political sympathy is not espionage. Travel is not recruitment. Association is not control. At the same time, legitimate diplomacy, education, cultural exchange, and political solidarity can create opportunities for intelligence collection, long-term cultivation, institutional access, and strategic influence.
Havana's Long Revolution avoids both extremes. It does not portray Cuba as an omnipotent force secretly controlling every movement abroad, nor does it dismiss the country as an impoverished and strategically irrelevant state. Instead, it asks how Cuba achieved international influence far beyond what its economic and conventional military strength would appear to permit.
The result is a detailed examination of the revolution that refused to remain confined to an island and became a network spanning generations, institutions, movements, and continents.
