It explores the conditions under which regimes maintain stability, the pressures that cause them to break apart, and the rare circumstances in which political systems reorganize without destroying the state itself.
The final sections apply these insights to contemporary regime transition problems, offering a framework for understanding how political systems might change without descending into prolonged conflict.
