Jen Marlow is thirty-nine, works in HR, and has entered the ballot for the big one three years running, with a glass of wine, in the way you do. Three Octobers running a magazine has come through the door with Sorry on the front. Then her sister Kate, who has run five and cannot get through a conversation about a fence without mentioning Berlin, rings with a charity place, a fundraising target of two thousand pounds, and six days to say yes.
I'm not a runner, says Jen. It lasts three weeks.
What follows is sixteen weeks. A plan on the fridge with a picture of a woman on a towpath. A fundraising page in everyone's inbox and forty-eight brownies made at midnight. A watch the size of a biscuit that tells her, before she opens her eyes, to consider a lighter day. Shoes with plates in them, kept in a box next to her wedding shoes. A treadmill in the children's playroom, and a five-year-old who moves into the box it came in. A vicar who says a half marathon is the same thing really, and lives to regret it. A running club called the Wednesday lot, a woman called Maureen who has done forty-one and calls everyone duck, and a canal with three hedges and a duck Jen can no longer look at. A sore shin she tells four people is a stress fracture. And a husband, Dan, a plumber, who has knees like a chair, will hold a sign and never run, and keeps a list on the fridge of everyone who has muted her.
The fourth book in the Funny, You Never Mentioned It! series is a very British comedy about the thing that happens to a perfectly normal person when someone says yes: the vocabulary, the money, the Sundays, the evangelism, the wall at mile twenty, and a sign with one word in the corner.
