Written in the Margins is a poetry collection from Paul Stiling - forty poems that move honestly through mental health struggles, fatherhood, grief, anxiety, and the slow, unglamorous work of becoming someone your children can count on.
These are not polished poems about pain viewed safely from a distance. They are written from inside it - from the 3am inventory of failures, from the year that almost didn't end well, from the moment a diagnosis finally gave the darkness a name. They are also written from the other side: from quiet Sunday mornings, from reading the same book aloud for the third time in a single night, from the kitchen table where ordinary life keeps insisting on itself.
Paul Stiling writes the way most people are afraid to - without decoration, without resolution that arrives too easily, without pretending the journey was anything other than long. The poems in this collection are raw and reflective, vulnerable and grounded, moving between despair and hope without cheating either.
Written in the Margins is divided into eight sections:
I. The Dark Interior - the private weight of mental health and what lives in the room you don't take visitors to.
II. What Almost Happened - the poems that exist because a different choice was made. Honest about how close it got.
III. Diagnosis and Language - finding words for what was nameless. The relief and the reckoning of finally knowing what you're dealing with.
IV. Fatherhood as Anchor - children who didn't save their father dramatically, but saved him in the ordinary sense: they needed dinner, they needed someone present, they needed orange juice and someone to pour it.
V. The Work of Becoming - the mid-construction version of a man. Scaffolding still up. Intention clear.
VI. Grief and Memory - grief that doesn't cooperate with your schedule. That arrives in supermarkets and in October and in the bread aisle when you're holding the wrong loaf.
VII. The Ordinary Sacred - the decision to stop waiting for life to begin and notice it was already happening. In the kitchen. On Sunday mornings. In a small hand reaching for yours.
VIII. The Long Way Home - where it ends up. Not fixed. Not finished. But standing, and grateful, and still going.
This collection is for anyone who has struggled quietly and kept it together on the outside. For anyone who has been lost and found their way back through small, daily, imperfect choices. For fathers who are trying. For anyone who has ever needed to read that someone else has been in that room - and made it out.
