And ye shall say unto the goodman of the house, The Master saith unto thee, Where is the guestchamber, where I shall eat the passover with my disciples? And he shall shew you a large upper room furnished: there make ready. - Luke 22:10-12
Two evangelists preserve this instruction. Matthew, who is writing to Hebrews and compressing, gives only the destination: Go into the city to such a man, and say unto him, The Master saith, My time is at hand(Matthew 26:18). Mark and Luke keep the sign. In the mouth of two witnesses shall every word be established, and the Spirit has taken care that the Waterbearer should be doubly witnessed before the Supper, doubly witnessed before the Cross, and doubly witnessed before the Upper Room where the Church of God was born fifty days later.
Consider the strangeness of the command. The Lord of glory, on the eve of the most consequential meal in the history of the world, does not give his disciples an address. He gives them a sign. He does not say, Go to the house of Mary the mother of John Mark on the western hill. He says: there shall meet you a man. The location is withheld. The person is revealed. And the person is revealed not by name, not by face, not by office, and not by garment, but by what he is carrying.
This is the first law of the Waterbearer and it will govern the entire book: you will not find the house by looking for the house. You will find the house by following the water.
The precision of the promise
Notice how much certainty the Lord packs into a sentence that contains no coordinates.
There shall meet you. Not you may find, not look for, not if you should happen upon. The Greek carries the force of a fixed appointment. The meeting is not a possibility that the disciples must engineer; it is an arrangement that Christ has already made in a realm the disciples cannot see. Their part is not to arrange the encounter. Their part is to enter the city.
A man. Anthropos - a human being, and, as we shall see in the next chapter, a specifically and startlingly male human being in a task that was almost universally female. The scandal of the sign is buried in that word, and Western readers have walked past it for centuries.
Bearing a pitcher of water. Bastazon keramion hydatos - carrying an earthen vessel of water. Not a skin, not a bottle, not a cistern. A keramion: clay, fired, portable, breakable. The treasure is in an earthen vessel from the first page of the Gospel to the last (2 Corinthians 4:7), and even the sign that leads to the Lord's table is a piece of pottery with water in it.
Follow him. Akoloutheo - the identical verb the Lord uses when he calls his own disciples. Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men. The disciples are commanded, for one evening, to give to a stranger with a water pot the exact obedience they give to Christ. The Waterbearer is not merely a landmark. He is, for the duration of his errand, a legitimate object of the verb follow.
That is a staggering delegation of authority, and it is the seed of everything this book will develop about the Manchild Company. Christ does not always lead the way to Christ. Sometimes Christ appoints a carrier, and the carrier's authority is not in himself but in what is sloshing in the jar on his shoulder.
