Hear me plainly at the gate of the book. I do not preach the strength of the flesh; I preach the strength of the LORD. The flesh hath its vigor, and the Book honoreth it in its place: the glory of young men is their strength; but the arm of flesh faileth on schedule, and every empire built upon it is a scheduled ruin. The strength this volume preacheth is another substance entirely: Trust ye in the LORD for ever: FOR IN THE LORD JEHOVAH IS EVERLASTING STRENGTH: tzur olamim, the Rock of Ages, strength that was never young and shall never be old. He that would be strong must therefore be joined, not merely exercised; strength is a Person before it is a property, and His gymnasium is a fellowship before it is a discipline.
And hear why the matter is urgent and not devotional only. The years 2026 unto 2050 stand before the nations as a valley of decision, and the deciding shall be long: not one battle but a generation of building, watching, planting, and holding. In such decades the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong of a single morning; the crowns go to the ENDURING: to households that hold their walls through many winters, to churches that outlast their persecutors' calendars, to nations that keep covenant across generations. But thus saith the LORD: Refrain thy voice from weeping... for thy work shall be rewarded; and the reward is dated past the fainting-point of the flesh, which is precisely why the sons must draw from the Rock: they that wait upon the LORD SHALL RENEW THEIR STRENGTH; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.
Therefore this volume marcheth in the order of the bow. First the everlasting strength of the Rock, who fainteth not, neither is weary. Then the Lamb, worthy to receive strength, whose might was made perfect in a slaying. Then the inheritance of might, for the fourth crown also is received by adoption and not achieved by regimen. Then the three pillars and the four rivers, the same load-bearing scriptures of the series, now read with the eyes of the strong. Then the approval of strength, the five crowns as the endurance-prizes, the epochs of covenant might, and the 153 protocol of the unbroken net. And at the last, one hundred forty and four declarations, twelve prayers, an oath, and a charge, that the book may end not as encouragement but as sinew in the arms of thy house.
Come then, thou son, thou daughter, thou weary builder of the coming decades. Bring thy tiredness as it is, unvarnished, as Elijah brought his under the juniper, and be not ashamed of it; the angel did not rebuke the prophet: he fed him, twice, and sent him forty days in the strength of that meat. The Table of this book is spread for exactly such travelers. The exhaustion is real; the Rock is realer. Rachel weepeth; but the Everlasting Arms are underneath. Let the reading begin.
