In the last year of the former century the young man sold his first enterprise, Zip2, unto the house of Compaq for above three hundred millions of dollars, and banked his first millions. From the sale of PayPal he carried away about one hundred and eighty millions, and sowed it - nearly the whole of it - into rockets and into chariots that drink no oil.
In the year two thousand and twelve the counters of Forbes first named him a billionaire, at two billions and four hundred millions. By two thousand and nineteen his substance was twenty billions. In the year following, when Tesla was divided and multiplied, he passed the hundred-billion mark and stood among the centibillionaires of the earth. In December of two thousand and twenty-four he became the first man counted at four hundred billions; in October of two thousand and twenty-five, the first at five hundred billions; and on this day, the first at a thousand billions - which is the trillion.
Mark this also: in six years his fortune grew nigh tenfold, a pace unmatched even by them that wore the crown of riches before him - Bezos of Amazon, Gates of Microsoft, Arnault of the luxuries of France. Seest thou a man diligent in his business? he shall stand before kings; he shall not stand before mean men (Proverbs 22:29). Diligence is not salvation, O reader; but neither is sloth sanctification. The ladder was four and twenty years in the climbing, and every rung was work.
Lo, let no man despise the long years of the obscure beginning, for the treasury is built in the warehouse before it is counted at the exchange. The seed that would become a tree must first rot in the dark of the ground; the gold that would crown a kingdom must first be dug from the night of the mine. So is it with every great increase: there is a hidden season, a season of prototypes and of failures and of mockery, wherein the world seeth nothing and heaven seeth everything. Be thou faithful in that hidden season, for it is the foundation upon which the tower is raised; and the God who seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.
