I Make No Apology
The herald's charge, set down before the first witness is called
Before I call the first witness, I set down my standing, that no man mistake the manner of this book. This is not an apology; it is a defence that asketh no pardon and seeketh no permission. I come not cap in hand unto the council of the dying, to plead with downcast eye that the doctrine of life might be tolerated among the doctrines of death. I come as a herald with a trumpet, to declare that the LORD is the giver of length and the swallower of death, and that whosoever saith otherwise hath believed the report of the thief, and not the word of the Shepherd.
For there is a meekness that is the strength of Christ, and there is a cowardice that the world hath dressed in the borrowed robes of meekness; and I will have the one and not the other. The Lord was meek and lowly in heart, yet He drave the changers from the temple with a scourge of cords, and called the proud generation a generation of vipers, and answered the gainsayer with a question that shut his mouth. So shall this defence be: lowly toward the wounded, and unbending toward the lie; gentle to the weeping, and salt to the scoffer. I will not water the doctrine of life to make it sip-able by a generation drunk upon the wine of death.
Hear then my charge, and let it stand for the whole book. I make no apology for longing to live long, for the LORD set the longing in the bone. I make no apology for calling death the enemy, for the apostle so called it (ἔσχατος ἐχθρός, the last enemy, 1 Corinthians 15:26). I make no apology for preaching the prosperity of length, for Wisdom holdeth it in her right hand. I make no apology for the City that hath no grave, for the LORD hath sworn to build it. And I make no apology for the salt upon my tongue, for better a word that stingeth and saveth than a word that flattereth and burieth.
And if any say, This is too bold, this is unseemly, this asketh too much - I answer: it is the boldness of a man who hath read the end of the Book, and knoweth that the last enemy is already sentenced. I will not whisper where the LORD hath shouted, nor apologize where He hath decreed. Let the salt be salt; let the trumpet be a trumpet; let the defence be unapologetic. The net is cast on the right side of the ship, and it shall bring up an hundred and fifty and three, and it shall not break.
