Stand at the base of Mount Rushmore, and you are not looking at managers. You are looking at leaders - people who made decisions that cost them something, who inspired action in others, and who left the world different than they found it. Nobody carves a mountain for someone who ran efficient meetings and hit quarterly numbers.
What separates the leader people remember from the one they endure? It is not a title or tenure. It is character - and character can be developed.
Complete with a ten-item Study and Discussion Guide, They Don't Build Monuments Honoring Managers is a practical, honest, and immediately applicable guide to becoming the kind of leader worth following. Built around the Nine Traits of Effective Leaders framework - developed and refined through decades of leadership workshops and real-world consulting - this book gives readers a clear picture of what genuine leadership looks like and an honest assessment of where they stand.
Part One: The Nine Traits of Effective Leaders
Each of the Nine Traits receives its own full chapter, grounded in real examples, case studies, and direct analysis:
Great Leaders Innovate - Innovation is a discipline, not a department. It starts with the questions leaders are willing to ask and the assumptions they are willing to challenge.
Great Leaders Create Value Through Values - Values are the operating system of an organization. Great leaders define them, model them, and hold others accountable to them.
Great Leaders Focus on People - The organizations that consistently win treat people as their primary competitive advantage - not in theory, but in daily decision-making.
Great Leaders Communicate Clearly - Most leadership failures have a communication failure at their root. Effective leaders speak with precision, listen with intention, and create space for honest dialogue.
Great Leaders Inspire Earned Trust - Trust is not given because of a title. It is built through consistency, keeping promises, and the willingness to be accountable.
Great Leaders Have Followers - Authority produces compliance. Leadership produces followership. This chapter examines what genuine followership looks like and what happens when it disappears.
Great Leaders Exhibit Integrity - Integrity is a daily practice - doing what you said you would do, especially when it is inconvenient and especially when no one is watching.
Great Leaders Build Great Leaders - The most lasting thing a leader can do is develop someone else. This chapter explores what it means to invest in the people around you as a genuine strategic priority.
Courage: The Trait Behind the Traits - Courage is the ninth trait because it makes the other eight possible. Knowing what the right thing to do is rarely the hard part. Doing it is where most leaders fall short.
Part Two: Leadership in Context
Part Two applies the Nine Traits to the real-world challenges that test them most - translating vision into targeted, measurable work; protecting culture from toxic employees; leading multigenerational teams; building resilience; and navigating change.
Drawing on forty years of experience in leadership development and organizational consulting, Roger W. Smith has written the book he would have wanted when he first stepped into a leadership role - honest, direct, and grounded in reality.
Monuments are not built for people who managed processes. They are built for people who changed lives. If you are ready to stop managing and start leading, this is your starting point.
