Sunflower in a Storm is a small collection of poetry about the many experiences of livelihood. Throughout the book, themes of mental health, trauma, learning, growth, relationships, and healing through adversity are discussed, in a poetic manner. Grasping from my own personal experiences and drawing from the experiences of others while working in the helping field, I have been able to reflect on my own healing journey and how others may relate to much of the content discussed. This can help others to feel not alone, and create a sense of connection and belonging. Despite holding back for so long, I have come to learn that there is true strength and beauty in being vulnerable, and it may just help others feel more comfortable to open up and share their story when they are comfortable to, as well. Through important values of kindness, communication, empathy, and authenticity, my hope is that the stigma and stereotypes surrounding mental health can be reduced, and we can find growth and healing for both ourselves and to advocate and support others who may be struggling.
