Its a bold claim, but this book really does 'explain';
- how we learn - why learning, recognising, understanding, eureka moments and humour, all give us such an enjoyable neurochemical buzz,
- how our pre-conscious association-detecting experience-trapping model-making neural-networks, generalise and abstract, from a stream of personal and cultural experiences, to assemble (and navigate) our causal maps and models of reality, our value systems and our emotional associations.
It looks at;
- the root causes of - the strengths & weaknesses - in human thinking - what we can do to try to avoid the; semantic deserts, self-referential cognitive pits and rabbit holes,
- and how (as we mature) we can begin to- take 'self' control of our personal development, updating old and dysfunctional models of reality, to take account of new or more accurate information about historical events, new perspectives, new experiences, new goals and changing circumstances.
It opens up the possibility of deliberately rewriting the WHATs, HOWs & WHYs that drive our motivation & behaviour, & presents a powerful Graphical Thinking Tool, that everyone (over 7 yrs ish) can use, individually or in groups, to explore and understand; the deep structures, the dynamic emergent patterns, the meaning and the significance, of any problem, any system, and any 'body-of-knowledge'.
Understanding went out of fashion for a while, but it is still 'the' ultimate skill, and 'a' key to success in any field of endeavour.
This is an update of the 2007 'Understanding Thinking' - and brings together important ideas from;

- J. Haidt's work on our evolved moral matrix,
- Kegan's ideas about cognitive development stages,
- Systems thinking,
- Complexity theories,

- the evolution of the brain as it evolved to cope with challenges & opportunities over 500 million years ('structural coupling'),
