'Pains of Giving Birth' is a short story about a young woman called Saynab who had a child out of unintentional rape. She was chased out of her parents' home by her uncle. She had a difficult time during pregnancy and after giving birth as she was periodically homeless. The child Ardina died in her sleep. She saw Giving Birth as a continuous process as she always felt pains of labour each time she thought of her child Ardina. Although the man, Shuceeb, who made her pregnant later featured and promised to take care of her and marry her, Saynab knew that her life would never be the same again without her little Ardina who was her only family. The void left by Ardina's absence would always be there, but she would carry her memory in her heart, forever cherishing the brief time they had together. The scream that never came was a silent testament to the depth of her love, a love that even death could not diminish since giving birth is a process.
'The Crack' is a short story where a woman left her home because of challenges they had with her husband. This story shows that a small crack, if not attended to, may become big and harmful in relationships. It shows that people should learn to talk about anything and be in a position to listen to each other and resolve issues amicably. Though Nothabo did not want to leave her home, she had to, for the benefit of peace and moving on in life. The story talks to the society about forcing couples to continue staying together despite challenges they face. Many homes have untold stories and the owners are wounded. 'The Rare Jewel' is a short story of a couple Lemon and Virgy who had been married for eight years, but childless. This began to cause problems in their home because parents were now demanding a grandchild. Mistrust pops up in such situations because couples drift away from each other if they always blame each other. Lemon and his family blamed Virgy, but Virgy argued that it could be Lemon who had a problem. Societal norms always blame women on bareness issues. It should be understood that money is not the only thing that keeps the home intact, but love and emotional support in a couple fosters a strong emotional connection, enhances feelings of security and belonging, improves communication, builds trust, and can significantly contribute to overall well-being and mental health by providing a safe space to be vulnerable. It strengthens the bond between partners and makes the relationship more resilient.
'Is this the Way it should be?'
In this short story, Miriam was John's second wife, after losing his wife to cancer. He had hoped that Miriam would take care of his child, Hazel, but things did not turn out the way he had wanted. She ill-treated Hazel because she could not have children and told her that she was not her mother. These things are happening in the communities, women promise to take care of a man's children and later on turn to be the thorn on the man's flesh. The society believes that children should not complain about the ill treatment they receive from elders. Parents are encouraged to listen to their children especially when children complain of their new mothers, fathers should not be blinded with love and forget their children.
