We all fight battles that the world never sees. For years, my battlefield was a quiet, devastating war within myself-a relentless struggle against the crushing weight of mental health challenges and the tight grip of addiction. When you are in the thick of that fight, the horizon vanishes. You are simply trying to survive the next hour, the next minute, the next breath.Like many who hit their lowest point, I went searching for a lifeline. I looked for a path that could lead me out of the dark, looking into the programs and systems available to anyone seeking recovery. Many of them are excellent programs, built with good intentions and proven to save lives. But as I walked through them, I ran into a wall. They were built almost entirely on a foundation of Christian thinking. The language, the framing, the spiritual assumptions-they spoke to a different soul. They did not speak to mine.My heart had already chosen a different path: the ancient way of the Ásatrú. I didn't need a shepherd; I needed a warrior's discipline. I didn't just need comfort; I needed a code of conduct, a framework of honor, and my daily recovery and mental wellness. Where the world saw old poetry, I found a tactical manual for reclaiming my life. The virtues of Courage, Truth, Honor, Fidelity, Discipline, Hospitality, Industriousness, Self-Reliance, and Perseverance became my steps. The Hávamál became my daily devotional. And it worked. It brought me back to the hearth fire from the coldest edge of the wilderness.I didn't write this book to preach, nor did I write it to tear down any other person's faith. I wrote it because I know what it's like to stand in the dark, looking for a map written in a language you actually speak. It is my most sincere hope that these daily devotions provide you with the same shield and spear they gave me. If you are struggling with your mental health, if you are fighting the long war of recovery, or if you are simply a traveler seeking strength on a difficult road-know that you do not walk it alone. May the wisdom of the High One guide your steps, and may the virtues keep your footing steady in today's battle.Skál.
