The children have gone. Nobody is leaving. So what are the next ten years going to be like?
That question gets asked in a great many quiet houses and almost never out loud. The books on this shelf are not much help with it: the relationship ones are written for people in their thirties who are still deciding what kind of life to build, and the ones about this age are about health, or money, or becoming somebody new at sixty.
This one is for the woman thirty years into a marriage, with the rooms empty and a decade in front of her that nobody has described.
TWENTY-FOUR CHAPTERS, SIX PARTS
- The house after they left - the first winter, the meals that no longer make sense, the conversation that used to write itself because the children supplied it, and the strange afternoon when you look across the room and see the actual person rather than the role
- Two people at home all day - eleven in the morning with both of you in the kitchen, his retirement and the fact that yours was never announced, the fourth month when the days lose their shape, and the finances that one of you has been quietly holding for thirty years
- When health comes into it - the first appointment you attend together, becoming the one who remembers the tablets, what an unwell house does to an ordinary disagreement, and the practical conversation everybody postpones
- Everybody else - grown children who still ring you first, his mother or yours, the friendships that only work in couples, and the people you have been meaning to see for five years
- The account of what was never said - the thirty-year list, why it cannot be delivered in one evening, the arrangements decided once and never looked at again, and what happens when one item finally gets said properly
- Staying on purpose - the difference between not leaving and choosing, an exercise that takes twenty minutes and does more than the rest of the book, and what you want the next ten years to contain
Every chapter ends the same way: what is easy to get wrong here, three things to do that require nobody's permission, and one question worth answering on paper.
WHAT THIS BOOK REFUSES TO DO
It does not tell you whether to stay or leave. It has never met you, and any book that has a view from this distance is flattering a decision you had already half made. It does not predict what he will do or promise that anything will improve.
There is no theory in it: no energy, no polarity, no masculine and feminine principles, nothing spiritual, nothing borrowed from a clinic. No labels for him and none for you. No statistics, no studies and no case histories - every situation described is a generic one and is written as one.
There is nothing about your body, your appearance or how you look at this age.
And it never uses the word renaissance. This decade is quite capable of being ordinary and good, and putting the best years of your life on it is a weight it does not need.
