The Nervous Mechanism of Plants is a seminal scientific treatise by the pioneering Indian polymath Sir Jagadis Chunder Bose. In this influential work, Bose presents his revolutionary theories and experimental findings regarding the physiological responses of plants to external stimuli. Moving beyond traditional botanical observations, the author argues that plants possess a sophisticated nervous system capable of transmitting electrical impulses, suggesting a profound similarity to the nervous mechanisms found in the animal kingdom.
Through a series of meticulously documented experiments, Bose demonstrates how plants react to diverse environmental factors such as light, temperature, and physical contact. He provides detailed accounts of his use of sensitive instrumentation, including the crescograph and resonant recorder, to measure and visualize the subtle internal movements and electrical reactions within plant tissue. The text explores the fundamental unity of life, bridging the gap between the biological processes of plants and animals. This work remains a cornerstone of plant physiology and a testament to Bose's visionary approach to science, challenging the scientific consensus of the early twentieth century and laying the groundwork for modern biophysics. Scholars and students of botany and the history of science will find this volume an essential exploration of the interconnectedness of living organisms.
