Written by second-generation licensed cosmetologist Latecia Hankerson, this work draws from 28 years of professional expertise and a childhood spent inside the culture of hair long before she ever held a license.
Although she entered beauty school at just 15 years old, her education did not begin there. It began in her mother Lula Hankerson's salon in Tampa, Florida, where she learned the value of service, professionalism, and entrepreneurship long before she learned how to drive.
Growing up inside the salon industry gave her a perspective few professionals possess, one shaped by both formal training and generational knowledge passed from one stylist to the next. It also exposed her to something the beauty industry has historically struggled to acknowledge: the ways hair, identity, emotional well-being, racial biases, and healing are often interconnected.
