Traditional Japanese martial art Maniwa Nen-ry originated during the Sengoku period (late 15th to early 17th centuries). This institution is predominantly a kenjutsu (swordsmanship) school that emphasizes the katana. Maniwa Nenami, a retainer of the Hōjō clan, established Maniwa Nen-ryū. The style is renowned for its emphasis on sword techniques that are fluid, precise, and efficient.
The Maniwa Nen-ryō school is renowned for its distinct collection of katana combat techniques, strategies, and philosophies. The knowledge has been transmitted across generations by means of practical instruction and oral tradition within the Maniwa clan and its affiliated institutions.
Similar to numerous conventional martial arts, Maniwa Nen-ryū places equal emphasis on ethical principles, mental discipline, and spiritual growth in addition to physical techniques. Typical training consists of sparring, kata (pre-arranged forms), and additional exercises designed to improve the practitioner's skill, mentality, and character.
