Drawn from four years of daily dream analysis - one to three hours each morning, producing nearly ten thousand pages of recorded dreams and interpretations across six volumes of original psychological research called Modern Alchemy - The Language of the Unconscious describes the seven moves of genuine dream interpretation: recording completely, finding the clew, engaging personal association before symbolic interpretation, bringing the secondary symbolic vocabulary to bear when personal association is exhausted, holding the provisional interpretation open for return, and trusting the uncertainty that genuine interior engagement produces.

Special cases are addressed in full: the nightmare and the depersonalization it requires, the dream that demands multiple returns across days, the Self dream and the discipline of accepticism, the opaque dream, the unresolved dream and its extension through active imagination, the synchronistic dream, the song on waking as confirmation of genuine resolution, and the déjà vu dream as milepost on a path chosen correctly.
