Just Happy to Be Here: The Hockey of Psychology
Psychology, Relationships, and the Quiet Art of Staying Human
What if maturity isn't about winning, fixing, or finally getting life right-but about learning how to stay in the game?
Just Happy to Be Here is a humane, accessible exploration of adult development, relationships, family systems, faith, and community-guided by psychology, lived experience, and an unexpected metaphor: hockey.
Drawing on decades of clinical work, the book examines how early adaptation shapes identity, how nervous systems drive emotion and behavior, and how family dynamics quietly follow us into adulthood. It explores why anxiety often lingers long after danger has passed, why cutoff feels relieving but rarely heals, and why growth depends less on insight than on regulation, repair, and relationship.
Along the way, the book looks at:
- emotional inheritance across generations
- why radical individualism often increases loneliness
- how authority and religion can foster growth-or freeze it
- what midlife, aging, and wisdom actually require
- why repair, not perfection, marks maturity
- how legacy is shaped more by presence than instruction
Hockey runs quietly through the book-not as competition, but as participation. Missed assignments. Line changes. Repair after a bad shift. Respect for the game itself.
This is not a self-help manual full of techniques or slogans. It's a developmental map-compassionate, grounded, and realistic-for readers tired of optimization and interested in becoming whole.
At its core, the book is about staying human:
- adaptation keeps us alive
- presence keeps us human
- repair keeps us connected
- gratitude keeps us oriented
- generosity keeps the game going
For readers interested in psychology, relationships, faith, leadership, or aging well in a fractured world, Just Happy to Be Here offers a steady voice, clear language, and a long view.
No hype.
No certainty theater.
Just an invitation to play your position-and remember that participation itself was always the gift.
For (Therapists / Clinicians / Educators)Just Happy to Be Here
A Developmental Framework for Emotion, Relationship, and Maturity
Written by a seasoned clinician, Just Happy to Be Here offers a coherent, developmentally grounded synthesis of family systems theory, nervous-system regulation, emotional literacy, and adult maturation-without jargon or technique overload.
Rather than presenting psychology as intervention, the book frames it as orientation: how early adaptation shapes identity, how anxiety reflects unfinished protection, how cutoff arrests development, and how repair restores relational capacity. Clinical concepts-differentiation, regulation, integration, generativity-are embedded in narrative and metaphor, making them accessible to both professionals and thoughtful general readers.
The book may be especially useful for therapists, counselors, educators, clergy, and leaders who:
- work with anxiety, trauma, cutoff, and family systems
- see clients struggle with midlife transition and aging
- navigate the intersection of psychology, faith, and authority
- want language that is accurate, humane, and non-pathologizing
Hockey functions as a stabilizing metaphor for regulation, positioning, repair, and participation-offering a shared language that lowers defensiveness and invites reflection.
This is not a manual. It is a long-view developmental map-useful for clinicians who want to think systemically, speak simply, and help people stay relational under pressure.
