In Search of the Core of Core Competencies returns to a fundamental question: what truly makes an organization competitive in times of profound change?
Originally written in 1993 as a Master's thesis at Erasmus University Rotterdam, this work anticipated many of today's strategic challenges. It goes beyond traditional definitions of core competence by examining its theoretical foundations, clarifying its meaning, and-critically-exploring its organizational and managerial implications. In doing so, it foreshadows later developments in dynamic capability theory, emphasizing not only what firms are good at, but how they continuously adapt and renew those strengths.
At the heart of this book is a powerful framework: core competencies emerge from the alignment of three elements-the firm's knowledge base, the delivery of customer value, and the managerial capabilities that enable learning and growth. When these elements reinforce one another, organizations can build advantages that are not only difficult to imitate, but also capable of evolving in changing environments.
The turbulence surrounding us should not obscure the strategic opportunity it contains. Artificial intelligence is a threat to complacency, to undifferentiated business models, and to organizations that mistake automation for strategy. Yet it is equally an extraordinary opportunity-one that allows firms to strengthen their core competencies, deepen what makes them distinctive, and amplify their competitive advantage.
In this sense, the present moment does not weaken the case for core competence thinking; it makes it indispensable. In an age of uncertainty, steady focus on its core competencies may be the most important source of direction a firm can have.
