Figures of speech in the Bible, in general, mark what God thinks is important. The phrase I would not have you ignorant is the figure antenantiosis. Antenantiosis is where a positive is magnified by use of an equivalent negative statement. For example, if someone said: He's not the sharpest knife in the drawer. You would not assume from that statement that this person might be the second sharpest knife in the drawer. Likewise, when someone says that they would not have you ignorant about a certain subject, they are saying that they really want you to know all you can about this topic. Therefore, the eight places in the Bible where this particular figure of speech is telling us to not be ignorant of something, are literally telling us that this is the really important part of the important part of God's Word.
