Août 1774. La Resolution mouille sous un volcan qui rougeoie dans la nuit: à Tanna, aux Nouvelles-Hébrides, des milliers d'hommes en armes guettent l'étranger venu de la mer.
De là , Cook met le cap au sud et découvre une grande terre inconnue, la Nouvelle-Calédonie, dont il explore les récifs traîtres avant de juger ses habitants les plus honnêtes de toute cette mer. Le navire relève ensuite l'île Norfolk, déserte et couverte de pins, puis rejoint une dernière fois la Nouvelle-Zélande, où court une rumeur terrible: un équipage anglais aurait été tué et mangé. Sans savoir ce qu'est devenu son second navire, l'Adventure, Cook repart vers le sud sans certitude.
Commence alors la dernière course dans les glaces. La Terre de Feu, le cap Horn doublé au coeur de l'été austral, la découverte de l'île de Géorgie sans un arbre ni une rivière, puis celle de la Thulé australe perdue dans la brume: Cook referme le tour de l'océan du Sud qu'il avait entamé deux ans plus tôt et tranche la question qui hantait l'Europe depuis deux siècles. Le grand continent austral n'existe pas, ou du moins n'est accessible nulle part où un navire puisse l'atteindre.
Restait à rentrer. L'escale au Cap de Bonne-Espérance livre enfin à Cook le sort de dix hommes de l'Adventure, tués en Nouvelle-Zélande, puis le voyage se referme par Sainte-Hélène, l'île de l'Ascension et les Açores. Trois ans et dix-huit jours après le départ, la Resolution mouille à Spithead sans avoir perdu un seul homme du scorbut, exploit qui vaudra à Cook la médaille Copley de la Royal Society. Ce tome donne aussi la parole au capitaine Furneaux, qui raconte la séparation des deux navires et le massacre du canot de l'Adventure à Grass Cove, rapporté par le lieutenant Burney.
Troisième et dernier tome de la trilogie consacrée au deuxième voyage de Cook (1772-1775), au sein de la collection Carnets de Voyages Oubliés, série Océanie et Pacifique, ce volume referme le trajet ouvert par les deux tomes précédents, des Nouvelles-Hébrides jusqu'au retour en Angleterre en passant par les glaces australes.
Première réécriture intégrale moderne pour le lecteur d'aujourd'hui, qui rend accessible ce récit sans rien trahir du voyage. 20 illustrations originales et 10 cartes redessinées donnent à voir l'itinéraire, tandis qu'un appareil de repères (glossaire, chronologie, index, pour aller plus loin, note de l'éditeur, postface) et des morceaux choisis du texte original éclairent la lecture.
