Novembre 1769. Au large de la baie de Mercury, l'Endeavour reprend sa route vers le nord et achève le tour de la Nouvelle-Zélande commencé dans le premier tome. Cook baptise un fleuve la Tamise, mouille dans la baie des Îles, double le cap Nord sous un ouragan, puis vient caréner son navire dans le détroit de la Reine-Charlotte, où il prend possession du pays au nom du roi.
Reste à prouver ce que Cook soupçonne depuis des semaines: un détroit sépare bien les deux îles. Le tour de l'île du Sud achevé, le conseil des officiers tranche à Admiralty Bay et met le cap à l'ouest, vers une terre encore absente de toute carte européenne. Après une longue traversée de la mer de Tasman, une côte inconnue se dresse enfin à Point Hicks: la Nouvelle-Hollande.
À Botany Bay, le premier contact tourne court: des Aborigènes brandissent leurs sagaies devant les canots anglais, un matelot meurt et repose sous le sable. L'Endeavour remonte ensuite vers le nord le long d'une côte entière encore vierge de nom européen, semant des baptêmes sur chaque cap, jusqu'à cette pointe que Cook appelle Tribulation, parce que là , écrit-il, commencèrent tous les malheurs.
Ce deuxième tome du journal authentique de Cook conduit le lecteur, jour après jour, des baies maories aux récifs de l'Australie, sur le fil d'une découverte où chaque cap franchi ouvre un péril nouveau, jusqu'au moment où l'Endeavour s'engage dans les eaux resserrées de la Grande Barrière de corail.
Ce passage du voyage marque un tournant: c'est ici, à Botany Bay puis le long de plusieurs centaines de kilomètres d'une côte totalement inconnue des Européens, que l'expédition de Cook prend pied pour la première fois sur le sol de ce qui deviendra l'Australie. Cook nomme la baie d'après la moisson botanique inédite que le naturaliste Joseph Banks et le botaniste suédois Daniel Solander y récoltent, tandis que chaque cap franchi reçoit un nom anglais qui figure encore aujourd'hui sur les cartes.
Le texte suivi ici est le journal personnel de Cook, rédigé jour après jour à bord de l'Endeavour, distinct des récits remaniés que l'éditeur John Hawkesworth publiera en 1773 pour le grand public. On y retrouve la voix directe d'un marin minutieux, plus attentif aux caps, aux vents et aux hommes qu'à l'effet littéraire, ce qui en fait une source de première main sur les tout premiers contacts entre Européens et peuples aborigènes d'Australie.
Première réécriture intégrale moderne pour le lecteur d'aujourd'hui, qui rend accessible ce récit sans rien trahir du voyage. 20 illustrations originales et des cartes redessinées donnent à voir l'itinéraire, tandis qu'un appareil de repères (glossaire, chronologie, index, pour aller plus loin, note de l'éditeur, postface) et des morceaux choisis du texte original accompagnent la lecture.
