Été 1768. À Deptford, sur la Tamise, un lieutenant encore obscur prend le commandement d'un vieux charbonnier rebaptisé Endeavour. Sa mission tient en deux secrets: observer, à l'autre bout du monde, le passage de Vénus devant le soleil, et chercher le continent austral que l'on croit tapi dans les mers du Sud.
De la Manche au Cap Horn, l'Endeavour affronte la défiance d'un vice-roi à Rio, le froid meurtrier de la Terre de Feu et les tempêtes de l'extrême Sud. Puis Tahiti paraît, ses lagons, ses chefs et ces vols d'objets qui exaspèrent les Anglais. Le 3 juin 1769, sous un ciel sans nuage, Vénus glisse enfin sur le disque du soleil.
Mais la véritable aventure commence après. Guidé par Tupaia, prêtre et navigateur tahitien, Cook met le cap au sud, vers l'inconnu, jusqu'à ce qu'une côte nouvelle se dresse sur l'horizon: la Nouvelle-Zélande. Là , les premiers pas tournent au sang, et chaque baie réserve son épreuve.
Ce premier tome du journal authentique de Cook conduit le lecteur, jour après jour, jusqu'au rivage de Mercury Bay, où l'astronomie et la conquête se donnent rendez-vous. La suite du voyage attend, par-delà l'horizon.
Ce voyage n'est pas une simple expédition de découverte: c'est une mission scientifique commandée par la Royal Society et l'Amirauté britannique, l'une des premières entreprises de coopération scientifique internationale, l'observation du transit de Vénus devant permettre de calculer la distance exacte entre la Terre et le Soleil. À son bord, le naturaliste Joseph Banks et le botaniste suédois Daniel Solander consignent une moisson scientifique inédite, tandis que l'astronome Charles Green pointe ses instruments vers le ciel austral.
Le texte suivi ici est le journal personnel de Cook lui-même, rédigé au jour le jour à bord de l'Endeavour, bien avant les récits remaniés et embellis que l'éditeur John Hawkesworth publiera en 1773 pour le grand public. On y retrouve la voix directe d'un marin minutieux, plus attentif aux caps, aux vents et aux hommes qu'à l'effet littéraire, ce qui en fait une source de première main sur les tout premiers contacts entre Européens et peuples du Pacifique, à Tahiti comme en Nouvelle-Zélande.
Première réécriture intégrale moderne pour le lecteur d'aujourd'hui, qui rend lisible ce témoignage sans rien trahir du voyage. 20 illustrations originales et des cartes redessinées donnent à voir l'itinéraire, tandis qu'un appareil de repères (glossaire, chronologie, index, pour aller plus loin, note de l'éditeur, postface) et des morceaux choisis du texte original éclairent la lecture.
