Juin 1679. Deux frères labadistes quittent un village de Frise pour une mission tenue secrète: trouver, de l'autre côté de l'océan, une terre où leur communauté pourra vivre sa foi. L'un d'eux, Jasper Danckaerts, tient son journal jour après jour.
Ce qu'il y consigne est sans prix. Voici le New York de 1679, à peine devenu anglais, encore tout hollandais: son fort, ses vergers, ses rues de boue, ses tavernes pleines de marins. Voici les fermes de Long Island, les Lenapes de Najack partageant leur galette de maïs, les planteurs de tabac du Maryland, les chutes du Passaic prises dans la glace. Voici l'Hudson remonté jusqu'à Albany, la traite des fourrures, l'interprète métisse Illetie et les récits d'un Mohawk converti. Voici Boston la puritaine, et le long retour par l'Atlantique Nord.
Danckaerts ne juge presque jamais. Il regarde. Et son regard sobre, attentif, traverse les siècles intact: c'est l'Amérique coloniale saisie au moment où son monde tenait encore debout, par un témoin venu d'ailleurs qui ne savait pas qu'il écrivait l'Histoire.
Danckaerts et Sluyter voyagent sous de faux noms, en hommes ordinaires. C'est peut-être ce qui donne à leur récit sa qualité si rare: les portes s'ouvrent, les langues se délient. En seize mois de périple, ils parcourent Manhattan, le New Jersey, le Delaware, les plantations de tabac du Maryland, remontent l'Hudson jusqu'à Albany et Schenectady, gagnent Boston et ses universités naissantes, puis rentrent en Hollande par l'Atlantique Nord et les Orcades. Danckaerts décrit une Amérique qui va bientôt disparaître sous la marée anglaise: il observe les Lenapes quand ils sont encore chez eux, écoute un Mohawk converti raconter ses visions, croise la métisse Illetie qui sert d'interprète au comptoir de fourrures. Ce carnet a dormi près de deux siècles avant d'être retrouvé par hasard chez un bouquiniste d'Amsterdam. Il n'avait jamais été rendu accessible au lecteur français.
Première réécriture intégrale moderne pour le lecteur d'aujourd'hui, qui rend accessible ce témoignage sans rien trahir de l'original. 19 illustrations originales et 8 cartes du voyage donnent à voir l'itinéraire, tandis qu'un appareil de repères (chronologie, index, postface, morceaux choisis du texte original, note de l'éditeur, pour aller plus loin) éclairent la lecture.
