Recurring food insecurity caused by a rapid succession of shocks is a critical issue for countries in the Sahel and West Africa. Governments have implemented policies and strategies to reduce populations' vulnerability to food insecurity, with support from partners, to combat the effects of food insecurity. However, it must be acknowledged that the situation remains a cause for concern. This study, conducted in the Kaédi department in southern Mauritania, revealed that the main risk factors are rising food prices and insufficient rainfall. The main coping strategies include reliance on humanitarian aid, income diversification, and increased day labor. Expanding safety nets, promoting agricultural techniques adapted to climate change, diversifying income sources, and supporting livestock farming are among the measures that should be considered to increase the resilience of rural households in the face of shocks.
